Medium is a social media platform for readers and writers. Thousands of writers post new content every day. Readers matter since Medium pays writers a small amount for every read. That’s why I post all my newest, naughty short stories there.

Do you know how to support your favorite writers on the platform? Medium changed how it rewards authors on August 1st. It’s a bit of a wack-a-mole trying to keep up, but here’s how Medium has put readers in control of the content here.

Writers earn revenue from the support of their readers. The more writers are rewarded, the more likely they will create content readers love!

It’s simple to support high-quality literary content on Medium with the new changes:

Read!

Follow!

Engage!

Essentially, writers are paid based on the following:

  1. Read: The amount of time readers spend viewing stories and articles demonstrates that the article was more than clickbait and was worth keeping the reader’s attention. An article is now considered “read” if a reader spends at least 30 seconds on the page.
  2. Follow: The more people who follow a writer after reading a post on Medium, the more that writer is paid. Readers can multiply a writer’s earnings simply by clicking the follow button. Not only will you help a writer earn more, but you will also see more of that writer’s content when browsing for new stories.
  3. Engage: Engage with the author through claps, highlighting, and comments. Medium is more than a digital newsstand. They are investing in encouraging writers and readers to connect and engage on creative content in a way few other platforms promote. Over time, content focused on what readers want to see will prevail.

Pitfalls:

  1. Only the first clap, highlight, comment, or follow from a user on an article counts. There is no need to go wild, but sincere engagement is appreciated. If you liked a story or article, consider writing a quick comment. Most writers love comments from readers and are quick to respond.
  2. If a reader spends less than 30 seconds on a page, Medium considers the content unread. This could penalize writers with short-form content, poetry, etc. So please take a few seconds to make sure a story is counted as read. Medium considers content with low “Read Ratios” as clickbait which reduced any potential reward for the writer.
  3. Writers will no longer be paid for any Medium subscriptions they obtain through their author link. However, if you signed up through an author link before September 1, 2023, the author will continue to receive a small percentage of your subscription payment for now.
  4. Writers must also be subscribers to get paid. That means that the Medium community supports itself. Both readers and writers contribute equally to the ongoing success of Medium.
  5. Viewing Medium in a mobile browser lacks the ability to highlight or comment on posts. Since these actions are now integral to Medium’s new payment system, I hope Tony Stubblebine at Medium has a plan to fix that for readers and writers. (Links on social media promotions often open up in the browser instead of the medium app.)

Why is Medium doing this?

Medium wants to focus on thoughtful articles and stories. They also want to encourage more interaction among the Medium community. See Medium’s original press release for more details. Change is challenging, but I love that Medium promotes a living community and supports of a wide variety of written content.

Thank you, readers of Medium!
